ONASSIS
“Only Me and God”
An 8 x 50’ TV fiction series
Can a single man, on his own and against all opposing forces, change the course of History? Aristotle ONASSIS, the wealthiest, most powerful character on the international financial scene in the second half of the twentieth century, shaped the politics and dogmas of America and Europe, and their impact on the rest of the world, into what they are nowadays. The most relevant events in the last times, from the 9/11 attacks to Khashoggi’s murder at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul; from The Arab Spring to the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine; can be traced back to the short, bright and vulgar Greek who maneuvered and conspired on the verge of illegality and far beyond any moral limits.
That extraordinary destiny that combined success, excesses, power and tragedy in sadly unequal parts, WAS FORGED IN ARGENTINA, where Onassis lived for more than twenty years after disembarking in Buenos Aires, at the age of 17, as a refugee who flew from the massacre of the Turkish army on the Greek population of Smyrna. There, he made himself rich due to his shrewdness, his Machiavellian conspiracies and his outstanding sexual performance, moved by a thirst for revenge; a desire to settle a score with the world and his own family.
Onassis was a contradictory character who believed in Divine Justice while knowingly committing the most despicable sins; who seduced, and married, the most powerful women to use them for his purposes, while only truly respecting cheap prostitutes; a macho man who nonetheless had occasional encounters with young men.
This series reveals such a complex personality by fictionalizing Onassis’ extravagant rags-to-riches story in Argentina: it depicts his ascension, making use of his innate intelligence and his capacity for seduction and sex, from his arrival until the moment a scorned EVITA PERON blacklists him, and he leaves the country forever. At this moment he’s 40, already wealthy, and has a dream in mind: becoming not only the richest man in the world, but also the most powerful. Something he’ll attain in future seasons.
Witnessing how it all began in Argentina, we will have to admit Onassis was not bragging when he stated perhaps the only truth that ever left his lips: “Only me and God can make something from nothing”.
