Coverage Reports and Adaptation Reports
A COVERAGE REPORT is a 4-5 page document that constitutes the starting point of the long process any script undergoes before going into production. It’s a must: no script should ever be submitted to any TV channel of a major production company without a previous coverage report. The document includes a short synopsis and briefly analyses:
- the script’s theme
- the relationship between plot and subplots
- the structure (turning points, rhythm, etc.)
- the main characters and the relations between them
- the dialogues and the script’s tone.
Besides, and since the coverage report constitutes the very first analysis of the script, it evaluates the script’s viability , its commercial potential and its ideal medium (cinema or TV, and which format).
A coverage report does not offer solutions; it just detects the weak points in the script and the aspects that should be reconsidered or reviewed, as the starting point for the rewriting process. For a deeper, more comprehensive analysis with suggestions and alternative solutions, a development report could be requested.

We accept to issue ADAPTATION REPORTS from literary works (novels or short stories; newspaper articles or features on occasion). We will not make any reports on ideas for the adaptation of real stories (in these cases, we can issue a coverage report or a development one, on scripts submitted to us).
Not only production companies, but also literary agents are increasingly requesting adaptation reports from us. Literary agents find it easier to negotiate with prospective producers if they arrive in their first meeting with a reliable, professional report.
An adaptation report is a 3-4 page document which includes a brief synopsis of the work and evaluates its potential to be adapted as an audiovisual work. It includes: media suggestions (cinema or TV? which format?); target audience; visual values; degree of adaptability (i.e. how faithful the script should be to the original source to meet the requirements of the audiovisual media); plots to be kept and plots to be removed; character adaptability; commercial values; rough budget estimate, etc.
An adaptation report does not offer structural or plot-related solutions (although it might suggest some). In other words, it will not constitute a treatment nor a layout of the script, since it is just a consulting job.
